What are Bulka Bags?
The Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container (FIBC) is commonly known in Australia as a “bulk bag” or more colloquially as the “bulka bag”, while other countries may know them as “jumbo bags” or “super sacks”. They are made of woven polypropylene and are used to transport and store items such as:
Agricultural products eg fertilisers, pellets or feed for livestock
Landscaping materials eg sand, pebbles, compost
Mining and mineral products eg copper, iron, zinc, gypsum and limestone
Industrial materials eg dry cement mix
When Bulka Bags become a problem
Useful as they are, once emptied, bulka bags can become a problem.
Many end up in landfill.
Others are stored on farms, in sheds, or outdoors which can create a fire hazard, or lead to issues such as:
Degradation of the bags – Prolonged exposure to the elements causes the polypropylene to become brittle. While the bulka bag may still look fit for purpose, seams and handles may snap suddenly when loaded.
Attracting unwanted pests – Empty bulka bags often retain the scent of the feed or pellets previously stored, making them even more appealing to snakes and rodents.
Contamination – if not stored properly, bags may be contaminated by substances such as mold, bird droppings, vegetation and other debris.
Causing injury – loose bags and dangling straps pose a risk of trips, falls and other accidents.
The Big Bag Recovery Program
A much better option is for businesses to participate in the Big Bag Recovery Program.
Manufacturers support the program as part of their commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their packaging.
Once a business has joined, they can return eligible bulka bags through approved collection sites – like Beneficial Recycling – so they can be recovered and recycled.
In order to be recycled, certain conditions must be met:
Bags are stored appropriately
Contamination is minimal
Loading equipment is available if required
Collection is commercially viable
Maintaining clean, dry storage conditions can help improve recovery outcomes and make collection safer for everyone involved.
What Happens Next
Once sufficient volumes have accumulated, Beneficial Recycling can arrange collection and transport of eligible bags as part of the Big Bag Recovery Program, helping ensure they are recovered and recycled responsibly.
In some circumstances, we can collect directly from larger agricultural operations. This is generally limited to sites producing significant volumes of eligible bags and where the bags are stored appropriately, contamination is minimal, and suitable loading equipment is available.
